President Hoover

Of the inn's most famous guests, Herbert Hoover is the one who often returned to Carrville.  He had spent time in the Trinity mining areas as a young man and came back to stay at the Carrville Inn many times.  Stoddard Matson recalls there was always a great fuss and flurry when the president arrived.  One time when President Hoover and his party returned late from a pack trip, Mrs. Carr, very anxious to please, asked the president what he would like to eat.  Hoover replied he hoped they had that wonderful black Indian corn he remembered from an earlier visit. As there was none, someone was dispatched to the nearby Scott ranch to pick corn in the dark and rush it back for the president's late dinner.

Clark Gable stayed at the inn in 1947 while the Carrville Inn was operated as Butterfield's Ranch Hotel Resort (a fly-in ranch).  Tom Butterfield, at boy of 14 at the time, remembers his excitement at having such a famous guest stay with them.

We have also been told Teddy Roosevelt stayed at the inn when he visited this area.

Margaret Hamilton's great great niece stayed with us a couple years ago and told us of Margaret's stay here. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 9th, 1902. She had been a schoolteacher in Cleveland, Ohio, and loved children.  "Aunt Margaret" made many movies and traveled extensively in her time. As far as we can pinpoint it, she stayed at what was Butterfield’s Ranch Hotel/Resort while in the middle of filming “Bungalow 13”, when she and a friend flew up for the weekend (no not on their broomsticks!), it was 1948.  The family remembers Aunt Margaret telling stories about getting burnt while filming “Wizard of Oz”, and how the “munchkins” were more “naughty than nice”. Margaret died May 16, 1985 of a heart attack while in Canada.  She had been married once and was divorced since 1938.
